Change is a permanent presence in any organization. Continual organizational change is vital to business as it works to grow market share, adapt to new technology and work to gain a sustainable competitive advantage over competitors. Yet, this simple word causes apprehension, tension or even fear when imposed on employees.

While it may be in the best interest of the organization to implement a change, employees might resist the change for many reasons. For instance, due to self-interest or the fear the change will result in a loss of pay, power or even one’s job. Another reason might be a misunderstanding surrounding the change. The employees do not understand how the change will affect their day-to-day job duties. Also, understanding why the change is being implementing might be difficult or trusting the management that is implementing the change might not be there. Lastly, change is demanding. Change requires effort from employees, and they may not want to give the effort to take part in the change unless required to.

Even with the employee resistance, the change must take place in most cases. There are several techniques ' managers can use to help reduce this resistance and bring employees smoothly on board with organizational changes. The top three techniques are organizational communication, allowing employees to take part in the planning and implementation of changes, and negotiation.
