Cathy Freeman didn’t care about be rich or famous she just wanted to have a loving family and a life she would not regret. Cathy has had an up and down relationship status. She first fell for her manager Nick Bideau of six years; they broke up because it was too hard on her but Nick still stayed her manager and her friend. In 1999 Freeman married a Nike executive, Sandy Bodecker who was 20 years older than her. After her success in Sydney she took a break to nurse Bodecker through a bout of throat cancer between May-October 2002. In February 2003 Cathy announced their separation. Later that year, Freeman began dating Australian actor Joel Edgerton whom she initially met at the 2002 TV Week Logies. Their relationship ended in early 2005. …show more content…
In 1997 Cathy went to the World Athletic Championships, Athens, Greece. There she won gold for the 400 metres with a time of 49.77 seconds. Cathy Freeman was becoming a very talented sports athlete where people where starting to really notice her and how much she can really achieve.

Freeman took a break in the 1998 season due to an injury. Upon the return the track in 1999 she never lost a 400 metre race, including at the world championships. Freeman’s winner streak continued in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. After her win Cathy did a victory lap carrying both the Australian and Aboriginal flags. This was despite the fact that unofficial flags are banned the Olympic Games and the Aboriginal flag, while recognized as official in Australia, is not a notional flag, nor recognized by the International Olympic Committee. In honour of her winning gold in at the Sydney Games, she represented Oceania in carrying the Olympic flag at the opening ceremonies of the next Olympics, in Salt Lake City. Throughout Catherine’s career she regularly competed in the Victorian Athletic League where she won two 400 metre races at the Stawell Gift Carnival. Freeman did not compete during the 2001 season. In 2002, she returned to the track to compete as a member of the Australian victorious 4x400 metre relay team at the 2002 commonwealth Games. Cathy announced her retirement in 2003.
