Register to read the introduction… Several studies show that the most valuable and important time commitment in a course was the time actually spent in the classroom.(Schiming) Some other valuable and important time commitments included the time spent in discussion sections that complemented the lectures, and the time spent studying outside of class preparing for the class itself.(Schiming) That study concluded that the most productive time spent in any course was in the classroom; and that time had the greatest positive impact on the students’ performance. Another study of similar motives was taken on the most significant activities the impacted the students’ performance in any given course. The results of that study showed the idea that the most important learning takes place in the classroom and that students who do a conscientious job on a daily basis preparing for and participating in class perform better than students who skip class and try to cram for exams.(Schiming) The study of class attendance in correlation with student grades was also statistically significant in determining the level of student performance. The research demonstrated the lack of attendance was significant in explaining why a student would receive a D for a course grade rather than an A, B, or C.(Chan) Statistics showed that regular attendance was a significant determinant in minimizing a student’s chance of getting a D or an F.(Chan) The same data was used to determine the relative impact of each absence in the student’s final grade for a particular course. Results showed absence from a class was statistically significant in lowering the grade of the typical student. Each absence from class lowered a student’s grade 0.06 in a 4.00 scale; meaning a student with ten absences in the term would lower his/her grade by 0.6, which would be the difference between an A and a …show more content…
These attendance policies are beneficial for the sake of the students’ performance in college, the positive affect of the various policies on student attendance and achievement, and the professors’ insights on the requirement of the attendance policies.
