Brave New World’s dystopian society takes hold of many of the characters throughout the novel. Even Bernard who spends a majority of the novel running from the programming he’s been given finally succumbs to temptation of both the stoma and the “orgy-porgies”. Although Bernard wasn’t strong enough to withstand the temptation one character was, John. John the Savage was the only character to completely throw off the system imposed by the Controllers. John’s life began in the “old” world raised by native people following their customs and even reading their scripture. …show more content…
John wasn’t completely free of his history until his mother was taken and placed in a permanent soma holiday. “All the same,” John persisted, “I don’t believe it’s right.” (Brave new world Pg.155). John would never have imagined his mother would be put into a drug induced coma and now that he sees it happening it before him he gets a glimpse into how the uppercaste live. Now John felt alone again and due to his exile from love he became a threat to the Controllers. The Controllers sent …show more content…
John represents the truth throughout the novel and works throughout it to bring other characters into the light. For Helmholtz he tries to convey themes from literature in order to help him enhance his writing. John also tries to share the truth of Liena’s feelings which she can’t explain. John comprehends love which Liena can’t wrap her head around.”Don’t think about him.” “I can’t help it” (Brave new world Pg. 188) Liena doesn’t understand she has feelings for him and so she feels trapped unable to get happy. John’s whole character shows helps the book prove that truth and happiness are incompatible. As long as John existed with the knowledge of what the world used to be like or what it could be like he would never truly be happy. As they say ignorance is bliss, and unfortunately for John he has more knowledge than he knows what to do with. John’s suicide allows the reader to finally grasp this as he hangs in the lighthouse the people carry on there merry adventures while the truth dies with the
