John is trying to connect back with his brother after for some time now. Since Robby became a rebel to the family and murdered a man, John, however did not understand what led his brother to do what he did and was trying to understand him now. John never understood what Robby was going through, or what he to deal with growing up. John was so into himself that he really didn’t take the time to connect with his indifferent brother when they were younger. If John had done connected with his brother at a young age rather than being selfish, Robby could possibly not be in the situation that he is in now. John seemed to be making a change but this is after when Robby is in prison. He wanted to understand the separation between Robby and himself that got in the way of their brotherly connection. John for once had to open up to his brother, not as a stranger, but as a brother. Robby said “The hardest habit to break, since it was the habit of a lifetime, would be listening to myself listen to him.” (704) John had force to overcome the division between the so that he would be able to understand what his brother was trying to say and feel. “The world had seized on the difference, allowed me room to thrive, while [Robby] been forced into a cage.” (704) John is trying to see and understand the different paths between him and his brother have taken that have led them to where they are
