The powder horn, stemming from colonial America, evolved through multiple time periods to fit the demands of the military during the Revolutionary Era. They used to be considered an art form rather than a tool for battle in colonial America. However, commencing in the French and Indian War, they were repurposed from being used solely in warfare, then refined even further during the Revolutionary Era. Makers hand-picked larger, more sturdy horns and became a widespread and necessary tool in the 1700's. Despite the powder horn being predominately used in combat, the art form was not relinquished, thus leaving behind not only a significant piece of history for tools in battle, but a piece of elaborate art alongside…
There was a large variety of drums styles from small hand drums to large arrangements of several drums. One of the reasons for the significant emphasis on drums is because of one of the integral features of African music and that is rhythm. A very unique rhythm as it can be directly attributed to one of the main features of Jazz, and that is…
Like the trumpet, the trombone is thought about a round birthed tool given that it has comprehensive parts of tubes, mainly in the slide part, that are of constant dimension. Tone trombones generally have actually a birthed of 0.450" (little birthed) to 0.547" (big or instrumental birthed) after the leadpipe as well as via the slide. The layout of these tapers impacts the modulation of the tool. As with various other metal tools, noise is generated by blowing air via pursed lips generating a resonance that produces a standing wave in the tool.…
Around the turn of the 1930s, music took an interesting ride with the earliest fully documented particular style of Jazz music emerging, which was centered in New Orleans, Louisiana; swing. It was not only a musical pastime, but a way of life; as those who brought it to us will live on forever. Duke Ellington was a pioneer of Renaissance jazz and one of the great elite jazz artists of his time. His most popular 1930 piece was "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing". Around 1931, he began developing the Swing style and was responsible for transforming the rhythm, make-up of the band, and the time of the pieces.…
Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was born in a very poor part of the city which was called “The Battlefield.” Louis Armstrong’s dad left his family a little bit after he was born and his mom was a prostitute, so he went to live with his grandma. “Introducing the Centerville Jazz Band!” This phrase will forever be in my memory. Walking on to the Lucas Oil Stadium football field, hearing these words, and watching the crowd roar is an experience I find myself lucky to have had. As a freshman, the opportunity to be a part of the Centerville Jazz Band approached me.…
They played at large events such as parades and concerts, often with a focus on ragtime music. String dance bands became less popular at informal events and the “dirty” music of brass bands began replacing them at the beginning of the 1900’s (nps.gov). Creole of color brass bands were very prominent in New Orleans and consisted of trained and disciplined musicians. They and all brass bands were very influential in the creation of jazz, especially in the instrumentation.…
When people think of marching band, they tend to believe it is a joke or a waste of time. Marching band is a more time consuming activity that starts late in the summer. Yet the people that are not involved in the Fine Arts are more likely to have these false accusations. While most believe marching band is not a sport, is for the unpopular kids, and requires no prior skill, it in fact requires a great deal of time and dedication. A lot of marching bands practice on a daily bases, implying the dedication of skill and physical contribution it takes.…
The Confederate army would also have brass bands. Music played a predominant role on both sides of the conflict between Union and Confederate. During the Civil War music was so important, especially on the battlefields. There were different instruments including the bugles, drums, and fifes. Fifes were small flutes they could carry and were played to issue marching orders or sometimes simply to boost the morale of one’s fellow soldiers from the brutality of the Civil War.…

According to the notes, Big-band writing consisted of four sections. These sections were trumpets, bones, saxes, and rhythm. The role of the rhythm section changed during the big-band/swing era. For example, the bass walks all four beats, there was the introduction of the electric guitar in 1936, the piano was played with a less stride style and more of a comping style, and the drummers of this era used new advances on their instruments such as the hi-hat cymbals or that they drove with the bass drum on all four beats. In addition, according to the textbook, arrangers of this style during this ear used a technique call antiphony, or the trading of melodic figures between two different sections of the band.…
I loved the music and the complex rhythms and challenges that this music presented me with. I also realized that I love jazz. After I had this realization, I made it my goal to be in the advanced jazz band. The only thing was that the advance jazz band was for traditional jazz instruments only. The clarinet is not a traditional jazz instrument.…
