What do you think of when people ask what is a sport? Most will think of football, basketball, or even golf, but they miss marching band. According to the Oxford Dictionary, “a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment." Many people will argue that it is not a sport and say it is an art form, but when the word sport is broken it down by its definition it is seen otherwise. Think about this, is it an activity that includes physical exertion, skill, are there teams, competition, does it entertain a crowd? Marching band has all of these and thats what makes it a sport.

Band members encourage other members to do their best when they do not get the steps down right away, or they can not quite remember their part in the piece. Just like a team each member of the band is responsible for there part of a performance. Most people may not realize this is happening, but marching bands do compete. Every sport have major league events that they compete in and marching band is not exception, we have DCI or Drum Corps. International, which is the largest competition for marching bands. It has been operating since 1972 and is made up of three separate divisions that the drum corps can participate in. All members are 21 years old or younger. Madison Davis an avid attendee to DCI shows explains that DCI is like the “NFL, MLB, and NHL” of the marching world and she finishes by saying that DCI “is a nonprofit organization” along with the other organizations. Even high school and middle school bands compete in competitions all around ranging from parade marching to field marching. As for entertaining a crowd, marching band is the soul of that. A marching bands purpose at home football or basketball games is to perform for the entertainment of the crowd and get the pumped up for the players playing. The will argue that all people in marching band do is walk for several minutes while carrying an instrument, and that band members do not play other sports. Unlike other sports it is not possible to control how well or bad the other bands do. Band directors may not be coaches but the do coach band members on dills and how the music should be expressed. There are judges instead of referees. Lastly they will argue that there isn't really a clear system of winning that it is more based on opinion of the judges. However more factors play into winning. The points are based on how well band members are able to stay in step, how accurate they play the notes, how well the piece is expressed, and how clean formations fall together on the field and in
