Dr. Martin Luther King gave a sermon discussing the Drum Major Instinct. Through defining and explaining the drum major instinct he exposed the true motives of segregation. He explained how large of an influence it has on the continuation of racial prejudice. This sermon used the Drum Major to better explain the actions of the white main to understand the unconscious motives behind racial prejudice.
The Drum Major is the leader of the parade. The Drum Major Instinct causes one to aspire to be the most recognized and important. King then claims, when a person cannot control the Drum Major instinct, their personality becomes distorted. A person who is always trying to impress his peers, will constantly try to boast about themselves. When they continue that, they will also resort to lies to make themselves seem better than what they actually are. The Drum Major Instinct will also cause people to partake in activities just to gain attention.
Dr. King then relates his message to racial prejudice and segregation. Because The Drum Major Instinct people are willing to do anything to maintain their superiority. For example the white man is willing to keep down his fellow black man if that means they will maintain a superior economic and social status.
I believe he was correct in this assumption, because people are rational beings and will act in their own self-interest. So when the white community was not negatively affected by the laws of segregation, and were reaping benefits from it. The white community was challenging the very nature of our nation’s belief, that every man is created equal and has the right to the pursuit of happiness. So the concern for nations is that powerful communities will abuse their power and do what they can to maintain it.
In my opinion, I believe Donald Trump is the best example of one with a Drum Major Instinct. He is very egotistical, and in the past has only acted in his own self-interest as a business man. He also is very quick to attack anyone who disagrees with him and imposes his power to get rid of any opposition. I also believe that for someone to be a Drum Major, they have to already possess some king of trait, or power that puts them above others. People who don’t really have that much are going to show some of the same intentions to become better, however those people are more humble of where they came from.
In America today I believe the Drum Majors are people of special interest groups and private businesses. They are the root cause for much of the corruption in our politics. They greatly benefit from many bad economic policies that give them huge winnings, and the nation has to pay for it. They then are willing to fund many congressmen and senators through campaign funding to lobby against policies that actually hurt the American public but greatly benefit
