Child labor was a major problem during the progressive era. Families who couldn't afford much had their kids work. From them being small they could climb into small areas and fix what's needed that adults can't do. The kids got payed less than adults which is why were was so many. In 1900 the percentage of kids working at the ages of 10-15 was 18.2(Doc 2). In 1910 the percentage went down because of the attention it was getting. Some the muckrack were Nellie bly, Susan Anthony and Jacob Riis. Nellie bly exposed insane asylums by making herself go crazy, by doing so she starved herself, locked herself in a room, and pulled out her hair. The only was she go in was by faking her craziness. When she went into the asylum, she had a reporter to show how badly the people there were being treated. Nellie bly put it in a newspaper for people to see how bad the treatment was. Another person was Jacob Riis a police reporter who took pictures and showed them. A lot of immigrants to get a better life were moving in and living in tenements. There was becoming so many that the plumbing, ventilation, and cramped. It got attention from his book “How the other half lives.” In result of it laws were passed that the tenements had to be and have twenty five feet long, improved sanitary , fire escapes, light access and more than 200,000 new tenements (History.com). Finally Susan B Anthony, a lot trying to get women to be able to vote. She worked tirelessly trying, she did speeches, protests, and even illegally voted. She later died in 1906 and women were still not able to vote. 14 years later the 19th amendment was passed allowing women to be able to vote.
