Jazz Band Autobiography

Music has played a gigantic role in defining who I am. When I was little I was always involved in music. Even if it was not me making the music, I was always bopping my head along or tapping my foot to the beat of the music. My parents were surprised to find out that I was the child that was fascinated by the marching band walking in the parade. I knew by a young age that I wanted to be in that band. The day I started to play my instruments changed my life, each in a different way. In 2002 I was overjoyed to find out that my mother had enrolled me in piano lessons with a family friend. I remember sitting down in our living room at the brown Baldwin piano pushed against our fire place. The keyboard itself seemed to stretch on forever with its gigantic keys. Barb came and sat down next to me on the hard piano bench and pulled out of her bag my first piano books. I loved the music and the complex rhythms and challenges that this music presented me with. I also realized that I love jazz. After I had this realization, I made it my goal to be in the advanced jazz band. The only thing was that the advance jazz band was for traditional jazz instruments only. The clarinet is not a traditional jazz instrument. I started talking to my band director about the different options I had to reach my goal. She had enough faith in me to recommend starting another instrument. Typically most clarinet players add the saxophone because of the similarities, but I was captivated by another instrument, the trumpet. In the summer of 2010 I began taking lessons on the trumpet through a private instructor and loved it. I was able to audition into the highest level jazz band that school year. I have not been able to pick one instrument, for each presents me with different challenges and
