Exemplification Essay: Why Marching Band Is Not A Sport

When people think of marching band, they tend to believe it is a joke or a waste of time. Marching band is a more time consuming activity that starts late in the summer. Yet the people that are not involved in the Fine Arts are more likely to have these false accusations. While most believe marching band is not a sport, is for the unpopular kids, and requires no prior skill, it in fact requires a great deal of time and dedication. A lot of marching bands practice on a daily bases, implying the dedication of skill and physical contribution it takes. The entire band has to learn a technique called “rollsteping” in order to march, which is pointing the toes up high and rolling the foot through the anklebone. “Rollsteping” helps marchers find a balance in their stance while playing an instrument at the same time. These groups come in all shapes and sizes, from the kids who play Pokémon like it’s their job, to the popular kids that run the morning announcements of the school. This means marching band is a place for everyone to express himself or herself in any way, shape or form with no one to judge them. Vestavia Hills Rebel Marching Band last year had ten National Merit Semi-Finalist. I had the privilege last years to be the bands Homecoming King Nominee, which the band never gets to have. By have someone represent the band in a popularity based position or by its students being honored with excellent academics, marching band effects the school and students for the better and not just for what people chooses them to be.
