Bottled Water: Expensive Poison Americans use a lot of water, in fact the average American uses 90 gallons a day. (Henshaw) Then it is not too surprising to learn America also has one the cleanest water reserves in the world. (CDC) A surprising statistic, however, is one-third of the American population drinks bottled water on a regular basis, when the majority have clean drinking water at home. (NRDC) This might be because the bottled water industry has promoted itself as a healthier and more portable alternative to tap water. However is it really any safer or better than tap water, or is it only a misleading and expensive gimmick to bring in money for large companies? Americans, as a whole, spent around $11.8 billion dollars on bottled water in 2012. (Boesler) It is surprising to discover that bottled water costs about 300 times more than tap water. (Boesler) Bottled water drinkers might think this is an adequate price considering marketers make them believe it comes from purified springs, but at least 25% of bottled water comes from municipal water supplies. The water is simply filtered and then sold in misleading packaging at an outrageous price. (RD) Tap water, however, in most places is considered safe, but if there any individual concerns it can be affordably filtered to take out bacteria, lead, and other dangerous contaminants.
