A person that challenges a book so it will get banned is foolish, ignorant ,and absurd. The American Library Association defines a Challenge to literature as an attempt by a person or a group of people to have literature restricted or removed from a public library or a school curriculum . Challenging a book is making a book more famous, because people now become curious and wonder why it's being challenged. People that want a book banned and decide to challenge it actually making books more popular and desired. The banning of a book due to a human being’s opinion and how they perceive can be different to another human being’s that can result in the banning of a book, which in my perspective should be considered as taking someone’s right to read whatever you believe is fit to themselves. For instance, you may be asking yourself ,“what right is being taken from us when that occurs?”, well as you may know the first amendment in our constitution is freedom of speech that states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Therefore, the only thing that should be banned in my opinion is the right to challenge a book just because it doesn’t fit your character, …show more content…
According to the ALA office for Intellectual Freedom the book Fallen Angels by Myers contains offensive language , racism, and violence. However, I agree that the book contains inappropriate content for young adults but it also demonstrates a young adult just like us that suffered an injury and couldn’t play basketball which was his passion, it was hard for him to overcome the situation because it was something he had worked for his entire life , but instead of being depressed he overcame an obstacle in his life and decided to enlists in the army to depart to the vietnam war which was escalating. I believe someone that steps up because his country is going through a tough time is brave and patriotic, life is a book, everything that happened in the book Fallen Angels can happen to any of us but more than half of us won't do anything about it and just sit there and be depressed, this goes to show that Richie Perry the main character in this book should be considered as a role model. “ My brother (Thomas Wayne “Sonny” Myers) went to Vietnam and died on the first day, i felt angry and mad, i felt guilty which was why i was inspired to write the book”, Myers in an interview on his book Fallen Angels.
