The banning and challenging of a book is typically decided by parents, school staff, and district officials. For a book to be challenged it has to be attempted to be removed or restricted. It is, again, based upon the objections or parents and school officials. Unlike a challenge a banning of a book is the removal of material that is getting challenged. Most of the time challenges and banning’s are motivated by the desire to protect the children from what people think may be inappropriate content, typically sexual or against a religion or sometimes because it promotes a certain religion.…

When it comes to religion, people often focus on a single chapter , a paragraph or a word before knowing the books content, basing their facts on opinions or personal beliefs. For example, a church in New Mexico burned all the Harry Potter books because they believed the books were satanic and went against their beliefs. They didn't allow their kids to experience the true beauty of reading these wondrous books. Banning a book goes against our freedom of speech law stating that everyone has the right to say whatever they want. When someone banns a book, they are taking away the author’s rights.…

Challenging a novel is completely different from the act of banning the novel. “A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group” (“About Banned and Challenged Books”). Banning is a very tough thing to do which is why many book challenges plunder due to the support of the novel itself or the lovers of books fighting for the children’s freedom to read what they please. The banning of books is the actual removal of the book from the district. This very rarely happens because the novel has to go through a “trial” of reading and noticing if the book contains items that are sexually explicit, contain witchcraft, or are extremely vulgar.…

I, myself, disagree with the idea of censoring books just seeing that one or a few people disagree with the book in anyway. One person’s decision may ruin the joy for everyone.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…

To ban a book would be the same as to cut the tongue of a man or woman and if one were to not to be able to speak their mind what then is the purpose of communication? Banning books is at most insulting the purpose of communication for if our words are thrown away then we lose a piece of communication. I once wrote a story about what I thought life meant, for my senior class and received a bad grade. The teacher wrote a note on the paper saying I was wrong and that I should try restate my opinion.…
