People have always been able to talk, write, and think, therefore allowing them to form an opinion about something, such as a book and whether or not it should be allowed or is appropriate for its intended audience. For example one of the books banned was The Call of The Wild by Jack London. Who banned it and why? Why are books like these banned or challenged? What does it mean to ban or challenge them, and should they be? In continuation we will discover the answers to all these questions.
First of all what is a banned or challenged book and why do they get classified that way? " A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials based upon the objections of a person or group and a banning would be the actual removal of the book that has been challenged"(Banned and...). Although it provides violent content and things were quite different in the past than it is now- and it is understandable that they had a different mentality- it should not have been banned because it provides insight into how life was back in the Klondike Gold Rush, since Jack London himself participated and lived it. It was based off his experiences. It was based off everything he saw, everything he did, everything he witnessed and felt. Another reason as to why the book should not be banned is because it provides a theme, symbolism, and is a great source of imagery, for example, the following scene provides a great sense of imagery: "Never had Buck seen such dogs. It seemed as though their bones would burst through their skins. They were mere skeletons, draped loosely in draggled hides, with blazing eyes and slavered fangs"(London pg. 29). It shouldn't be banned, it should be allowed to be read in any classroom, because it could provide a lot of information and examples of literary
