Consumers are a major factor in the economy. Economies thrive with the consumption of goods and services, but how do consumers decide what to purchase? Do people go to the grocery store and randomly buy a laundry detergent or cleaning product? Of course not, they rely on product advertisement. Millions of dollars are spent every year to advertise a product. A thirty second super bowl commercial cost around four and a half million dollars. Although it may seem like a waste, companies use these commercials to portray how their product is better than others. Three companies that use advertising to their advantage are OxiClean, Shamwow, and Apple. OxiClean used endorsement through Billy Mayes upbeat attitude to welcome consumers. In the first visual Billy Mayes is well dressed and smiling. Buyers would rather purchase a product from a relatively positive company rather than a company that used a gloomy celebrity to endorse a product (Rothenberg). They need to know that a product works correctly and satisfies them. In the visual Billy Mayes proudly throws up a thumbs up. A thumbs up, too many, shows a sign of approval (Wood). As Billy has his thumb up in the visual, he is approving that the product works and satisfies him. A company aims to satisfy their customers, so advertising satisfaction is an important advertising strategy. Smiles may be present and satisfaction may not be felt if a product is difficult to use. The visual presents that the product is simple. It is contained in a small, round container. This interpretes the simplicity of the product (Shinn). With a simple product, consumers will not spend hours upon hours of frustration or reading a book of instructional manuals.
