1. What are Better World Books’ resources and capabilities? What core competencies do they have to help them compete in the used book industry? Better World Books (BWB) is a fairly new start-up company, providing a competitive option against the likes of companies such as Amazon, collecting and selling used books to keep them free of the landfilled. while donating a portion of their profits to support global literacy efforts. Better books has discovered a way to combine financial gain with a social mission that they are passionate about. Founder Xavier Helgesen is challenged with how to price his products to capture the value of their social good; how to manage multiple channels of distribution, including selling direct to consumers; and managing the social impact of negative public perceptions on the business once the company turns profitable.
