An active community is always required to make the most change and to help the most people. I struggle with making connections with others and trying to build healthy relationships. This is something that I need to work on so that I won’t miss opportunities to pour into other people’s lives like I’ve been poured into. To being fixing this, I already know that I need to stop drawing back and being hesitant from opportunities to talk to people that I don’t know. I feel that if I don’t need to talk to someone else, then there is no reason to do it when I know that any opportunity to talk to new people builds my relationships and could be a chance for me to talk more about my faith possibly helping others. To seize these opportunities, I need to open myself up more, of course not all the way but enough to show others that I am willing to try and make a

At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better.…

For example, in Baltimore and many other cities, people who are exemplary community members work to alleviate poverty, housing issues, unemployment, lack of education, and any other issues affecting the region. On a national or international scale, these people would work to impact similar problems along with others such political and cultural conflicts, long-term sustainability, and refugee crises. Someone actively involved in their community strives to find the solutions to problems that impact those around him or her, even if those problems do not impact that person specifically, because the mark of a true community member is that they understand that the betterment of an individual is linked to the betterment of others. This is why charitable acts and organizations that help the less fortunate are so integral to every…

I believe that to be a Christian, one must be ready to make commitments and stay true to them. However, just as St. Francis of Assisi said, "Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary use words," one must be apprehensive in their attitude towards their peers. Last summer, I had the privilege to work as a Catholic summer camp counselor.…

Graduation hallmarks a time of genuine but, scholastic reflection of dynamic memories, while personal goals dictate achievements, spiritual growth, and a legacy left for younger generations to follow. Shorter University fosters the opportunity to receive a Christ-centered education while allowing students to remain focused on pursuing their relationship with God. As an exuberant high-school senior, I reside with my mother, younger sister, and my troublesome pet cat, Cally, and I enjoy working part-time at Marco’s Pizza. My arduous pursuits consist of playing the clarinet, writing poetry, learning the art of the French language, and volunteering throughout the community. Apart from earning a degree in accounting at Shorter University, my personal goals, that I will accomplish by graduation, range not only - from harnessing a deeper relationship with God as I continue to fulfill his call to share the gospel - but also, to developing new, yet immutable friendships, while cultivating my greatest contribution: my desire to publish my writing to glorify God.…

When I was little, I wanted to be a chemist. I imagined myself in the lab coat and with goggles on, carefully pouring electric blue liquids and jade green foam back and forth into various containers, until something had exploded and I had discovered the best way to make flowers the size of people. As I grew up, I lost this fantasy, but I gained more knowledge on how I wanted to influence the world. Funnily enough, I discovered what I really wanted to do when I started working at Chick-fil-A during the summer before my sophomore year. All of my friends had warned me against working in fast food, quoting horrible smells and ridiculous customers and tons of grease.…
