Professionalism has many different definitions, depending on who is defining it and the environment it is being applied to. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, professionalism is: “the skill, good judgement, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well”. In regards to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor, these elements are key to achieving success. The most important components of acting as a professional and achieving success are: motivation, resilience, teamwork, people skills, high quality work, and self-development. I once read an article on these traits and it has stuck with me through the years.
Motivation is a very important part of displaying professionalism. I define motivation as finding a reason to get up in the morning and work towards goals. My motivation behind waking up in the morning is becoming the best person I can possibly be. My education is very important to me. I work hard to advance my education and become a Licensed Professional Counselor. My ultimate goal is to become a Licensed Professional Counselor and develop into the best professional I can be. Resilience goes hand in hand with motivation. Resilience shows how a person adapts and overcomes stress and adversity. Throughout my life I’ve been faced with adversity.
