As far as being persuasive goes, commercials and television clips can, and should aspire to be very effective when shown in the right way. Regardless of what audience it targets. By using the right amount of logos, ethos, and pathos the commercial can reach out to a greater audience, therefore making it highly affective.
The video I chose to analyze is a BC SPCA animal cruelty awareness commercial. It features a variety of small clips of dirty, injured, and sick animals stuck in cages and crates. While those clips are being shown, the song ‘In the Arms of an Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan is being played in the background. They brilliantly established ethos within the commercial. The BC SPCA (The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the organization backing the commercial up. The organization’s credentials are practically perfect and it is a non-profit organization that actively accepts donations. The organization even provides governance structure and annual costs and donations information on their webpage. This is a very authentic and noticeable way of conducting and broadcasting the organization’s resources. Doing this ensures that people looking to donate money can be sure that it goes to a worthy cause and that it’s not a scam. By using Sarah McLachlan as their spokesperson, more credibility is established. Sara McLachlan put her reputation on the line, and as a public figure, she hold those things as a top priority. If the organization turned out to be a hoax to get money from gullible people, her image would be greatly if not more affected than the
