In 2011, firearms killed 32,251 people in the United States (Lafrance, 2015). Improving laws, the process of background checks to be sure that the people licensed to guns are the not mentally ill, are some of the numerous ways we can reduce gun violence. Requiring background checks to all purchases at gun shows should also be ruled. Limiting people from the amount of guns they are allowed to purchase in a month or year would be beneficial as well. However, I also do not believe that the second amendment states the rights for individuals to own guns. The second amendment was written to prohibit the government from infringing on the citizen’s rights and their state’s powers. I think that our government does not mess with or interpret that amendment because if the Supreme Court rules guns as illegal it would cause a lot of uproar throughout the nation. Some may also believe that violence with gun trafficking could arise if guns were banned. The amendment was also created for defending attacks by Native Indians.
