Before the Tom Robinson trail Atticus is worried because he is doing a task which takes up a lot of courage. During the Finch’s family trip for Christmas, Atticus and Jack Finch have a conversation and Jack must have known that it is a difficult time for Atticus, so he said: “Let this cup pass from you, eh?”(117). Harper Lee makes an illusion of Atticus as a Christ-like figure. Atticus has to prove Tom innocent and will undergo a lot of stress. Miss Maudie explains why Jem and Scout haven’t been aware of their father’s talent. It’s shown that Atticus has never talked about his talent because his own children did not know about it until he shot the dog. When Miss Maudie said “…I guess he decided he wouldn’t shoot till he had to, and he had to today” shows that Atticus deiced to never shoot any animal which is a way of respecting all of Gods creations. Lastly, Atticus shows himself being humble and sticking to God’s commands, when Bob Ewell approaches Atticus and calls him names, threatens to kill him, and spits on him, but according to Miss Stephanie Crawford, “Atticus didn’t bat an eye, just took out his handkerchief and wiped his face and stood there and let Mr. Ewell call him names…” (291). This portrays him being humble because Atticus could have given Bob what he wants but Atticus doesn’t let his pride get in the way. So he stands there and lets Bob call him whatever he wants. When Jesus was going around and preaching, he taught the people that they should turn the other cheek meaning, we shouldn’t return an insult for insult. Atticus followed what Jesus was saying by letting Bob Ewell call him names and not retaliating by spiting on Bob
