Raymond’s character in the book isn’t thought to be an important part to the main picture of the book, but to a single story Raymond is the main point of empathise. Dolphus Raymond chooses to live his drunken story because of his beliefs. Two pages in To Kill a Mockingbird really stands out to me with Raymond’s story. He’s speaking to Scout & Dill, who are children. But he speaks to them about his choices because their children and won’t see the world as nasty and naively. Scout starts the conversation asking why does Mr. Raymond lives like he does. Mr. Raymond’s response to Scout’s question was with a question, he responded by asking a simple question, why do I pretend? Mr. Raymond responded to his own question. By saying that the people in Maycomb don’t like how he lives, that they see him as a disgrace but Mr. Raymond makes it very clear that he doesn’t bad mouth them either. Mr. Raymond asked Dill & Scout if they understood but the children did not. I can picture Mr. Raymond lowering his voice and responding with his thought with giving the people reason. Starting from a young age, Atticus life was a single story. Atticus had to be himself through and through. He wasn’t given a chance to have mess up or down days. Having the Finch’s name really put a burden on Atticus shoulder’s. Atticus job brought the burdens to him, the job brought responsibilities and expectations. The town respected him to a point where he was called on multiple occasions to do the “dirty work”. Miss. Maudie was speaking to the children and explained Atticus situation; “We’re so rarely called on to be Christians, but when we are, we’ve got men like Atticus to go for us.” (Lee 288)
Therefore Atticus single story wasn’t just one time example, it was his life. People perceive a single story as just one moment but it can be over a lifespan. Atticus life was truly a tested one, but he accepted the life and kept his head high.
To conclude this essay, a single story defines society from the beginning of time. A way to really make you picture or grasp a single story think about this, a book has a beginning, middle, and end. With many copies of the book throughout a region or country. But a single story only has one copy and that’s the copy that the reader or viewer see’s it as. Through To Kill a Mockingbird Lee discusses a single story through insignificant ways that only a few can grasp if they were paying attention. A single story challenges everyone from all sides of
