Overcoming Adversity
Adversity comes in all shapes and sizes, ranging from having lost a valuable good to dealing with sickness or disease. The one thing that is different about people who face adversity is how they deal with it, which is clearly illustrated in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In this novel , adversity is conquered in many ways. This is demonstrated through Scout, Atticus and Jems use of their wisdom, determination and bravery, to overcome societal prejudice during a very tough time in history. Throughout the novel, Jean Louise Finch is subject to numerous roadblocks that she overcomes using her strong-willed determination. The real struggle for Atticus comes midway through the novel when he is chosen to represent Tom Robinson in court over raping a white girl. Through Atticus’s use of wisdom, he manages to come deal with this tough time in a very professional manner. Throughout the whole event Mr. Finch remains calm and collected, dealing with whatever is thrown his way with his great use of words and deep connections with Maycomb’s citizens. Atticus has a strong passion for what he believes is right and he preaches that to his children. With these values about racism and the way people should be treated, he overcomes the obstacle that is representing a black man in court. Another one of the many adversity’s that Atticus deals with having to keep his children out of trouble. Jem and Scout find themselves in trouble from time to time, and one of those times is when they try and get a look at Boo Radley. Atticus tells his kin that they should leave Mr. Radley alone because he was like a mockingbird, in that he has never really bothered them so they have no need to go and bother him. With being an older man Atticus cannot be out running after his children and discipline them so he has to use his wisdom to persuade the kids into obeying him and getting them to stay out of trouble. Which is the tool that he uses to overcome his adversities. To summarize Atticus use of wisdom and experience help him in tackling the challenges that life throws his way and that is why Atticus is a great example of someone who can calm stroll through adversity without breaking a
