Lee creates many well-developed characters that contribute to the story. Chracters like Atticus, Scout, Jem, and Boo Radley are just some of them. Lee brings the story to life through her chracters. On the surface Atticus is a mature character that is ethical and does not harm, so it is hard to see how he may have a poor side to him. Best shown human condition from Atticus is in the case of Tom Robinson. On one hand Atticus defends Robinson, even in the semi-racist Maycomb country Atticus choses to defend a black man which is the right thing to do. But on the other and the Lee makes Atticus want to protect this man by his want to be able to live with himself. Scout asks her father why he is protecting Robinson The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again. This shows a bleak representation of what the selfishness that Atticus has in hes defense of tom Robinson. The human condition of the character helps create the theme of this
