Often called the epitome of goodness and fatherhood, Atticus Finch is a prime example of a strong conscience. In the novel, Atticus Finch is presented with the case of Tom Robinson, a young black man who is accused of raping a young white woman. In the 1930s of small town Alabama, the chances for Robinson to be acquitted is near non-existent; there is much tension between the white and black due to a lack of jobs and the pre existent notions of the past decades. Yet Atticus does not put this case aside and let the jury “decide” on the already predetermined fate of Tom Robinson, he chooses to put up a fight against the prejudice and hope that at least some will be swayed.
