Atticus Finch, the father of two main characters Jem and Jean (Scout) Louise Finch, in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a great, hardworking father who would do absolutely anything for his family. Mr. Finch Works as a lawyer, chooses who he want’s to defend/represent based on his opinions on their situation. He stays true to his beliefs no matter what anybody else thinks or says. He will do anything and everything to keep his family safe along with teaching them important life lessons along the way. After further consideration, Atticus Finch is a great, hardworking parent because he does whatever he can to provide for his children, teaches important life lessons, and makes sure to tell his kids when they have gone too far. Harper Lee wrote, “Jem’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. ‘Old hell-devil, old hell-devil!’ he screamed flinging it down. ‘What can’t she leave me alone”(Lee 111)? Shortly before this quote was stated, Atticus explained that Mrs.Dubose was a Morphine Addict. He was furious with the fact that he had to read to her but /atticus gently set him straight. He further explained the ill Mrs. Dubose’s condition which put him in line. All Jem wanted was to be free from having to do a nice thing which is a lesson that he learns. On page 112 on To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus talks about the lesson he was trying to teach Jem. Atticus told Jem,” I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand”(Lee 112). This shows ALong with a lesson, Atticus informed Jem of when he was taking it too far. When I say taking it too far, I mean being very rude and inconsiderate. HE never took into perspective on what Mrs. Dubose was feeling. The pain she was in from being ill. He was being rude towards the older woman, and Mr. Finch, being the amazing father he is, talked to Jem and told him what Mrs. Dubose was going through.
