Ask Only Open Questions

At the beginning of class, I enjoyed watching the video Asking only open questions. I found that it helped me see how open and closed questions looked like, in an interviewing session and that it’s important to use both open and closed questions. The video clearly showed that using only open questions would not work well when I am trying to help a client. It felt like the social worker kept going around in circles asking the same broad questions and at the end of the session there was no progress made. As a social worker, I believe the client should leave the session on a better note than the video showed and that goals should be made if they have had a few sessions together. Although, I felt the group work was helpful to see how other people would interact with the client, which helped give me new ideas on what I could say in different particular situations. After the client answered the previous question, I thought of what questions I could possibly ask but if I couldn’t think of anything, it was useful to have the group’s opinion. Unfortunately, I found it hard to formulate my own questions in the group because many people were giving questions so fast that it was difficult to think of what I would actually respond to the client with. Furthermore, when we were in the group work I felt self conscious about what questions to ask because I was not sure if they were correct. I think as I practice more I will become comfortable asking appropriate questions and less nervous around the
