Confidentiality In Social Work Essay

As a social worker, we have a code of ethics that we need to follow. These codes are important to follow to build a trusting, efficient, and professional relationship with our clients. The code I find interested to me is confidentiality. The code of confidentiality is important not only for the social worker, but for the clients as well. This code is to help and protect sensitive information shared by the client. I feel that explaining what confidentiality means to the client is very important. This will demonstrate respect towards them, it can and will help build a working relationship. Social workers need to also address each situation case by case. They may have to share confidential information with other agencies such as law enforcement, and cps. Confidentiality can be considered complicated because it is delicate.
Social workers have an important role with their clients. Social workers need to build trust in the relationship to know what resources or services to provide. (NASW, 1996, P.6) Social workers have the hardest job when searching for other community agencies to assist their clients because they must request information without sharing confidential information. Social workers need to protect their clients.

If I observe this behavior in our practicum I would have to remind them of the confidentiality and the rights of the clients and tell them that they are in violation.
