Art Analysis: Sarah Sze's Art

1. Sarah Sze’s artwork attracts the viewer by directing their attention to her piece to identity the different objects within her artworks. I was attracted to the colors and the array of identical items. She makes something out of nothing and its eye opening. She transforms these everyday objects into gravity-defying works in horizontal and tower-like formations that zigzag into the heights of gallery spaces. The creative uses of ordinary object drew my attention and made me think of different ways I could now use everyday objects. Reading more about her, I’ve learned that she collects little things everywhere she goes and adds it to her pieces. This made me

The video begins us with being introduced to Katharina Grosse in her studio in Berlin, Germany. She is seen photographing a poem by Ernst Jandl for a christmas card, and while she talks about how she’d always loved language, she tells us that the moment she learned about painting a new love began. Katharina points out the strong contrast between poetry and paintings. An art gallery featuring paintings by Cindy Vojnovic was held in ESU’s Fine and Performing Art Center this past Wednesday. Vojnovic stated that she had gotten into painting when she was around three years old, after visiting an art exhibit with her parents, because she was “completely lost in the brush work”. Vojnovic’s paintings told the story of a forgotten steam-boat fire that happened on June 15, 1904. The sinking of the General Slocum, or the General Slocum disaster was the burning of a steamboat on the shoreline of New York. Most of the people who died in that fire were women and children, meaning more than 50% of the total passengers had not survived.…

Melinda’s artwork represents her growth throughout the story because at the start of the story her art was bad, not very detailed, dark, gloomy. At the midway point of the story her artstyle improved, her art was ok, average, but it was still gloomy and sad but was slowly gaining life. At the end of the story Melinda’s artwork is full of life, happy, detailed and pleasant to look at and it really shows how she has grown not just as an artist but as a person as well. Through her piece, one is able to learn that art is something personal, it is something that can act as a catalyst in invoking past memories, and finally it is something that can be done and created by anyone. Different people have different views about art, some may like it, while others hate it, but no matter what there isn’t a right or wrong way. Because of different pasts, different people would interact and relate to art differently. And although, in recent times, art has become less prominent as it was in the past, it shouldn’t be something taken lightly. Art is all around us, and is an integral part of our everyday lives.…

Artists have used collections to group together different objects to create art pieces. Collections can be diverse and artists can use this technique to create unique pieces that harness their own aesthetics. Both George Herm and Jean Dubuffet are artists who have used this technique. George Herm’s, The Painter’s Mind features an old piece of wood with two L shaped brackets, an orange bottlecap glued to a scrappy piece of paper and a ripped off piece of paper from the book: The Painter’s mind, which inspired the work. George Herm focuses on using overlooked, mundane objects to create collections, collages and sculptures.…

Image 1: This image is asymmetric because elements are offset from each other and making the painting unbalanced. The composition is affected by the offset of people in the painting and the visual effect can also affect the composition. The boat is not centered and there are more people on one side of the painting than the other which also makes it asymmetric. There are more cool colors used in this painting then there is warm. I see a couple things that are red and a few that are a light yellow color, but besides that, there are all cool colors being used.…

I never intended to study architecture. When I was applying to colleges, I intended to study kinesiology and psychology. Studying dance and photography when I was younger gave me a desire to be expressive, and even though I felt a connection to the physicality of dance through kinesiology, I knew I wanted to do something that fulfilled that same sense of expression. It wasn’t until I studied architecture that I noticed some of its similarities with dance. Dance is expressive of the body, but it is also an observation of people’s interaction with each other and with their surroundings, a study of people’s movement through space.…
