George Herm's Aesthetics

Artists have used collections to group together different objects to create art pieces. Collections can be diverse and artists can use this technique to create unique pieces that harness their own aesthetics. Both George Herm and Jean Dubuffet are artists who have used this technique. George Herm’s, The Painter’s Mind features an old piece of wood with two L shaped brackets, an orange bottlecap glued to a scrappy piece of paper and a ripped off piece of paper from the book: The Painter’s mind, which inspired the work. He takes it as his life’s challenge to create as much art as he can and out of anything he can find. “The challenge, really, which one accepts, is to turn everything into art,” Herm says. “So, the more mundane an object is, the …show more content…
The orange colour of the bottlecap contrasts against the rest of the neutral colours that surround it, which again makes it easier for the viewer’s eyes to be drawn to it. Herm has also created isolation because of the colour contrast. Another focal point of the work could be the two large L-shaped brackets. Because of their size, a viewer’s eyes could easily be drawn to it. In the top right of the work, the shoe gives off a rugged texture as it is torn. As the piece is featured on a wood canvas, most of the work gives off a rough texture, however, smooth textures can be found in the centre of the bottle cap and the L-shaped brackets. The L-shaped brackets can also serve as lines of radiation, drawing the viewer’s eyes to other parts of the

An artist must encompass every characteristic, if not, then the artist is no more an artist than myself. Throughout my life, I have had an innumerable amount of ideas; however, I do not have the skill, ability, devotion, and passion necessary to express those ideas through art, therefore I am not nor will I ever be an artist. For these reasons, I believe it is essential that an artist craft their work without the use of…

Lavoisier’s chemical instruments are prominently displayed on the right side of the canvas, rendered in the sharply naturalistic style characteristic of many of David’s portraits. In particular, the meticulously constructed interplay of light between the chemical instruments and their surroundings elevates the portrait for the observant viewer. Both the spherical glass chamber at the bottom right and the stand of the gilded glass cylinder reflect an image of a window, perhaps the source of light given Lavoisier’s partial illumination. Additionally, the red tablecloth boldly highlights Lavoisier’s coat and scientific instruments, attracting attention to the couple’s environment after the viewer has observed the central figures. This choice seems particularly choreographed, as an expensive velvet tablecloth would be ill suited for scientific experimentation.…

The times of European supremacy in the world in the sense of imperialism and the sort has come to past, but some ideologies still remain from these periods. Some standards set by Europeans in those earlier periods of human civilization still remain and are hurting us on a global scale today. Many of the art outside of Europe were referred to as “primitive art” instead of just simply art. The understanding here is that many of the objects that we might refer to today as art objects that were created in areas “primitive” to Europe were not created specifically to wrench aesthetic or moral feelings from their observers, which is they do not qualify as artworks (Boundless 2015, 1). Although this is a subject up for grabs, especially since “art” has a myriad of definitions.…
