Antony vs. Brutus “To be or not to be, that is the question” Shakespeare. In fact, that was the question regarding Caesar’s death and the answer was “to be”. Cassius, after many tries, finally convinced Brutus to join the conspiracy against Caesar. Brutus had to betray his friend, Caesar, but convinced himself that it was for the good of Rome. The day the senate was going to crown Caesar was the day Brutus and the other conspirators brutally murdered Caesar. After his death, the conspirators announced freedom to Rome and held a funeral for him. At his funeral, Brutus gave a speech to explain to the bewildered Romans why Caesar had to die. Afterwards, Brutus allowed Antony to give his own speech to honor Caesar, but instead, Antony decided to give reasons of why Caesar did not deserve to die. After careful examination of both speeches, it’s clear that Antony delivered a more effective speech than Brutus. Brutus tried to explain the reasons behind Caesar’s death in a speech at his funeral without trying to dishonor him. Brutus’s stance is that he killed Caesar for Rome. He claimed that Caesar would have been a terrible leader because he was ambitious. He said this on line 30 of his speech, “death for his ambition”. Brutus also claimed that the Romans would have been Caesar’s slaves. Again, his reason is that Caesar was ambitious.
