However, at the beginning Brutus was able to sway the Roman people to see his side of the story. He included logos and ethos in his argument to make it more effective in gaining the citizens trust. In some aspects the arguments are similar, but one is more effective that the other. Antony's speech is the greater of the two. He is able to capture emotion and bring it into his speech to the crowd. One way is when he weeps over Caesar’s body and shows the Roman people the stab wounds from the conspirators. Antony says to the crowd the most unkind cut of all is from Brutus, his “best friend” (III, ii,184-185). Not only is Antony able to use pathos but he also brings literary devices into the mix. While justifying his reasons for the speech, that he “[isn’t speaking] to disprove what Brutus spoke” but rather “speaks what he knows,” Antony uses verbal irony. The statement contains irony because he says that he speaks not to disprove Brutus, however he did the opposite by the claims against the Conspirators. Using the irony as bait to draw in the citizens, Antony builds on his tone of manipulation. The irony makes him appear as a good guy, that does not speak out against others, so the people respect him differently. He manipulates them into listening to the rest of the words he must say.…

Antony states his direct purpose and asks for his audience’s attention outright, thus creating mutual respect through ethos by addressing his peers as equals. In addition, Antony appeals to the crowd’s emotions by mentioning Caesar’s will and how every citizen lies within in lines 132 and 133 of scene 2 in Act III. This employment of pathos riles up the audience and influences them to join his side, yet it also creates a leash with which Antony ties to the crowd to fulfill his agenda. Continuing, Antony leaves nothing to chance or opinion by focusing on the fact that he has no business in disproving Brutus’ words, but only to speak what he knows (III. ii. 100-101).
