Abraham Lincoln There have been forty four U.S. presidents over the past two hundred and twenty years. What president has served the best for our country? None other than Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln is the greatest president ever because he did great things such as ending slavery, getting the us through the Civil War, and helped our country a lot. The American Civil War was a war between the Southern states and the Confederate states. Abraham Lincoln was not very prepared for the war militarily, but he knew about war. His time in office was peaceful for about a month and he was the only president whose whole presidency was focused on war. In 1844 he became Illinois House of Representatives and served for four successful terms. In 1846 Abraham Lincoln was elected into the United States House of Representatives and served for a two year term. Lincoln then continued practicing law in Springfield. It is not a very positive thing, but the assassination of Abraham Lincoln is a very important part of history. The assassination is well known and gives him some sort of respect, and therefore making him a greater president. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865. While the American Civil War was coming to an end Abraham was killed. Abraham Lincoln was the first American President to be assassinated. Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth, a well known actor at that time. Lincoln was shot while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., and died the next morning. It was a very sad, but memorable date and he served as a great president, the greatest president the United States has ever had. Another aspect of Lincolns great presidency is that people still see him every single day. The penny, or the Lincoln coin was first introduced in 1909 till 1958, and have used a new design since 1959.
