Through my research, I have found that, to my opinion, and to the opinions of many others, Abraham Lincoln was the one President who did the most for our country and was the most effective president. He was the one who led the country through civil war, abolished slavery, and kept the union together. Lincoln was also an accomplished speaker, a great politician, and also a strong military leader and activist. According to 18 different surveys conducted by Schlesinger, M-B, Chicago Tribune, Siena, R-McI, C-SPAN, WSJ, Times, and USPC, Lincoln was voted best president by far, with Roosevelt and Washington trailing behind.
Lincoln was the President who led the country through the civil war, which was "the bloodiest war in American history". While doing this, he kept the union intact and endured a huge amount of stress. In order to catch secessionists, he temporarily suspended the habeas corpus so he could place them in custody without trial, ordered the arrest of suspects, closed post offices to suspicious outgoing mail, and ordered the southern ports blocked, all for the cause of winning the war and unifying the country.
