There are six steps to become a licensed veterinarian. The earning of two degrees’, the courses that are recommended, the extra certifications required to specialize in particular fields, the testing to pass on to the next step to become a licensed veterinarian, the veterinary experience to get on your feet and an idea of what is expected, and lastly, the interview process. Once a student has gone through all six steps, then the student is transitioning into a doctor of veterinary medicine. To become a licensed veterinarian, a student must major in either a science or mathematics degree. As a personal reference, I am considering majoring in microbiology/pre-veterinary medicine. Microbiology is the scientific study of microorganisms. Examples of microbiology are bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Students will take about four to five years of studying before they graduate with their bachelor’s degree. During the course of the students’ undergraduate studies, it is recommended that the students maintain a grade point average of a 3.5 or higher. During a students’ undergraduate years at a four-year university, the students’ obtain a strong background in science and mathematics. A few examples of these courses include biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, zoology, algebra, calculus, and statistics.
