Another method of abortion is the pill. The pill can only be taken when it has been 10 weeks or less from the woman’s last menstrual cycle. If it has been more than 10 weeks, the woman must have an in-clinic abortion. (Planned Parenthood). Before taking the pill, it is required to follow the same steps as the in-clinic abortion which include: discussing your decision with somebody, reviewing your medical history, having a physical exam as well as laboratory tests, and reading and signing any necessary papers. The pill contains three steps, and all must be completed for a successful termination. The first step is to take a medication known as mifepristone, which blocks progesterone. “Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, and pregnancy cannot continue.” (Planned Parenthood) The next step is to take misoprostol, which empties out the uterus. Misoprostol is taken 24-48 hours after the mifepristone, and “more than half of women abort within four to five hours of taking the second medication.” (Planned Parenthood) For other women, it may take longer, but for most, the process is complete within a few days. The final step is to follow up with a doctor one to two weeks after taking the medication. It is important to confirm that the abortion was successful and the woman is healthy. The abortion pill is almost always effective, but in the unlikely case that it was not, the health care provider will either provide more medicine, or perform an in-clinic abortion.…
