Shouldn’t you be able to decide what you do with your body? How would you feel if someone told you what your could or could not do to your own body? This is the dilemma women face every day since abortion is constantly a topic of much debate. There are many opinions on whether or not women should be able to have an abortion or not. I think women should definitely be able to have an abortion if they want to. Women’s health can be affected if she is not able to have one, the fetus can’t feel pain, and overall it should be the woman’s choice. To begin with, fetuses aren’t able to feel pain during the time abortions are performed. Pain doesn’t occur for fetuses until the 29th or 30th week of being in the mother’s womb. Abortions occurring that far into the pregnancy are rare and sometimes illegal (“Should Abortion Be Legal?”). Dr. Anne Davis, an OB-GYN and abortion provider, says, “... Neurons that carry pain signals aren’t developed until the third trimester of pregnancy.” (Miller). Nothing has happened to the fetus to support pain experiences. Flinching and other reactions when detecting pain as a fetus are just reflexes (“Should Abortion Be Legal?”). If pain depends on situations obtained from outside the brain, then fetal pain can’t be possible (Derbyshire). That means that women should be able to have abortions if they decide that would be the best option for them. In fact, fetuses don’t feel pain when abortions are performed therefore that shouldn’t be a reason women shouldn’t have them. Also, the mother’s health is very important and she needs to take care of herself. If an abortion needs to take place so she can remain healthy she should be able to have one.
