There may be times when a disagreement will occur between children, in classroom during an activity, on the playground or even queuing in the hall for assembly. On all occasions the best plan of action is to step in and listen to all parties involved. Different surroundings may also help to ease the situation, so by taking the child away from where the incident occurred, this will allow the child to open up more to why it happened. A calmer environment allows the child, whatever their age, to be able to discuss the issue in their own terms.
Try to use an empathetic manner with the child by making them understand further. For example: “Jonny is very upset with what has happened, how can we make sure it doesn’t happen again?” Always ensure any disagreements are dealt with using a consistent approach, ‘fairness’ is very important to children, and they will respect an adult who deals with everyone who has been involved in an incident in a fair manner and hears from all sides.
Always report any disagreement incident that has occurred with the child or children to the class teacher. It is always best to inform the child that you will be doing so this will encourage further trust with child and that you haven’t gone behind their back.
