Teachers are professionals just like doctors, psychologists, and lawyers; thus, just like other professionals, we must abide by a code of ethics and professional standards. According to the Florida Department of Educations (FLDOE), we as educators must value the worth and dignity of everyone and be devoted to excellence, while always seeking the truth and acquiring knowledge along with the careful nurturing of our democratic citizenship. It is important to understand that in order for these achievements to be successful we must accept the fact that there is freedom to teach and freedom to learn as well as equal opportunities for all. Additionally, the students and their learning development and potential should always remain our first priority.

Additionally, there are several obligations that we have and must keep to our students. First, as teachers we should do all we can to protect our students from anything that may harm their learning, whether it is their mental or physical health and/or safety. Moreover, we should restrain students from seeking learning independently or deny access to multiple and diverse view points, nor should we deliberately distort lessons in academic programs. FLDOE also states that we should never expose, embarrass, or ridicule a student, something some teachers seem to forget in a moment of anger. We should not ever violate our students’ legal right, or in any way, harass or discriminate against a student simply because of their race, color, sexual orientation, or for any other reason. We also have a responsibility to ensure that all students are guarded from any harassment and/or discrimination. Additionally, we should not for any reason exploit our relationship with students for personal gain or advantage. This is important because we know how difficult it is to build relationships with students and thus, we should always try and protect our relationship so that we may remain a positive and trustworthy role model in students’ lives. We should not by any means force or promise special treatment to influence others’ judgment of us. Moreover, we should lie about our professional qualifications or spread lies about our colleagues. Also, we should never submit or withhold false information in our profession. If we ever have to submit a written statement regarding changes in employment or wages by a certified professional we shall do so accordingly. We should also never help an unqualified person work in our profession in accordance to the FLDOE’s code of ethics and professional standards. Most importantly, we as educators, have an obligation to self-report any arrests or charges that may involve child abuse or the possession or selling of controlled substances to the appropriate authorities within 48 hours. Additionally, we also have an obligation to report know allegations of a violation of FLDOE’s code of ethics to appropriate authorities and not seek revenge on any one who reports any allegation. Last but not least, we should always comply with an order of the Education Practices Commission and if ever required as supervisors, cooperate with the EPC in monitoring a subordinate’s
