Working with children is both challenging and rewarding because, to a large extent, it is all about social interaction and trusting relationships. Relationship building describes the process of establishing emotional connection with others based on trust and mutual respect. Positive relationships do not happen by chance thus, being able to communicate effectively and constructively with children and young people, is extremely necessary in building and strengthening respectful and trusting relationships.

During this time I have gained a greater understanding of the key principles that contribute to building respectful and trusting relationships. I firmly believe that when communicating with children it is important to use the right type of language appropriate for their age and stage of development, individual needs and abilities. I am also aware of the fact that effective communication is an active process that combines a set of skills that includes nonverbal communication, attentive listening as well as being considerate and showing respect. Whether communicating on a one-to-one basis or in a group, the following principles apply just the same.

Developing respect is closely linked to developing trusting and meaningful relationships, for which I always strive to be a positive role model by treating children the way I would like to be treated. I always greet the children with a smile whether within or outside of the school premises. I do, on occasions, see children in supermarkets or in the High Street and I always acknowledge them in a friendly and positive way. I am also mindful of the importance of being honest, reliable, approachable and consistent throughout all interaction with the children I come in contact with. For example, a few months ago towards the end of the school day, Peter realised he had lost his gloves and asked me if I would accompany him to the ‘lost property’ box to help him look for them. After a thorough search through the ‘lost property’ I asked Peter if he had checked his bag and peg and suggested that I go with him to help him find them. He seemed quite distressed as the gloves he had lost were a birthday present from his Grandma. To help him retrace his steps I suggested to Peter that he possibly took them into the Art Room and they probably slipped under the chair when he got his coat, which had actually happened. Once he fetched his gloves I showed Peter how it may be best to put the gloves inside his coat sleeve as they are less likely to get lost
