As I walked into Allen Elementary, the first thing I observed were the bright colors in the hallways. The student’s artwork lined the walls and college pennants hung from the ceiling with the student’s names. Seeing the pennants immediately made me think of what Payne (2013) wrote, “spiritual resources provide a person with a ‘future story,’ which gives him/her hope for the future” (p. 9). Teacher’s had bulletin boards outside their classroom. They were decorated with items from the college they attended which I believe reaffirm their “future story”.…

In this case study, Rich Thorpe is an extremely passionate first-year teacher at West Alton High School. Rich was very grateful to have received this job, and has put a lot of effort into his teaching, despite the pressures of a first year teacher. For the first three quarters of the year, he has had good classroom management skills, and his students respect him as a teacher. Labeled or not, no one’s journey in life is the same; the sooner that educators recognize that this is true of students, the better. There is nothing more boring than a teacher who consistently approaches his or her classroom as the “sage on the stage,” but this is usually the first approach of new teachers (pg. 70). Students, especially adolescents, do not think that teachers are perfect. When a teacher presents him or herself as “all-knowing” students, especially adolescents, may feel challenged to prove them wrong. Our craft provides us with the opportunity for continual learning and growth. Our students are exceptional and they require a safe, caring and stimulating environment in order to grow and mature. As an educator of nearly 14 years, I have had the opportunity to assist students in meeting their fullest potential by providing a classroom atmosphere that is safe, supports taking chances and invites sharing of ideas. Knowing an idea or being capable of an achievement does not necessarily imply an understanding of that concept. To learn a concept and subsequently retain an understanding of it requires reflection, internalization, and application to the tangible world. Effective Teacher A great characteristic of an effective teacher is to have an authentic relationship with a student. In order to do this, the teacher would need to have a great sense of observation, make a connection with the student, get the student’s trust and encourages him or her to learn the subject. Teaching is a complex profession because they have a large amount of challenges. Some of those challenges are large size class, inadequate amount of testing for some students, lack of creativity ideas, lack of parent participation, low salaries, frustration with coworkers, summiting a lot of paper work for each student, different types of personalities in each student, lack of controlling the classroom, etc.…
