    After reading the synopsis of the Star Trek episode it is clear that Picard and Maddox have differing views on the mind/body problem. Picard's view is very materialistic compared to Maddox who has a very dualistic view. Proof that Picard is more materialistic can be found throughout the synopsis. He believes that Data should be able to make his own decisions and should have rights to determine what happens to him and what does not happen to him.
