Spock’s role within the crew is that of what can only be termed a modern day Google. Providing information position him as “Mr. Professor”, this episode demonstrated that brilliantly. Jim is informed by Scott (Bones), played by James Doohan, of an impending solar flare that will “play the very devil with the crew as well as ship” (Star). Spock, without missing a beat, states “it will take exactly 71.4 solar hours for the storm to pass” (Star). The viewers have come to expect Spock to deliver his message with a monotone voice and lack of expressions on his face. Spewing data as though he was a modern day computer; He is often consulted with as Jim’s personal and private oracle. He also has the distinction of being involved in 17 different temporal violations, a career record which still stands” (Kirk). While this argument may be true, one could suggest that he aspired to his role by exploitation of those around him or cronyisms. In 2286, James was “Charged, convicted and reduced permanently to captain's rank by the Federation Council for theft of Enterprise a year earlier, after saving Earth from alien onslaught by securing two extinct whales via time-traveling; given command of U.S.S. “A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglying stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.” (Adams 26)This book makes everything you think you know sure that you know it. DB 1 “Innocent Amusements” Hartman’s analysis of the “precariousness of empathy” performs as preparation for her examination of how whites have often hijacked the black experience for pleasure, both as an instrument of empathy and with nefarious intentions. This subjection of the black experience for white pleasure is evidenced by minstrel shows that reinforce black subjugation (29), observations made by whites of black “merriment” as somehow describing the slave perspective (34), and the characterizations of the slave as a commodity that wants to be bought (38). After reading this, I began to think about parallels to today. Is the black experience still only legitimized and occupied when recognized by the white dominion? If so, this historical…

The action taken by Jim was wrongful (or in violation) of the FMLA (Family Leave and Medical Leave Act). This is because the FMLA states that “As long as you are able to return to work before you exhaust your FMLA leave, you must be returned to the same job (or one nearly identical to it).” (FMLA (n.d.), p. 8). It was not adequate (or legal) to just give Gavin a position with the same salary, bonuses, etc.…

Hartman’s utilization of the white abolitionist John Rankin’s admonishment of slavery through imagining himself and his family as enslaved demonstrates how it actually “inadvertently confirms the expectations and desires definitive of the relations of chattel slavery” (Hartman 19). Hartman recognizes Rankin’s intentions as well-meaning, but argues, “the effort the counteract the commonplace callousness to black suffering requires that the white body be positioned in the place of the black body…” (Hartman 19). This analysis of the “precariousness of empathy” acts as preparation for Hartman’s examination of how whites have often hijacked the black experience for pleasure, both as an instrument of empathy and with nefarious intentions. The Empathy Diaries The first section of the book began to introduce the ideas that Turkle would be revisiting throughout the book, setting the stage for what the book would be about. This section makes the claim that we are straying from good conversation, and need to get back to real, in person conversing. A passage that really spoke to me was “It all adds up to a flight from conversation--at least from conversation that is open-ended and spontaneous, conversation in which we play with ideas, in which we allow ourselves to be fully present and vulnerable, Yet these are the conversations where empathy and intimacy flourish and social actions gain strength.” (Page 4)…
