Egyptian Life: A Cycle of Sunrises and Sunsets Present day Egypt is filled with pyramids, tombs, hieroglyphs on stone, and other relics documenting a complex religious history. Understanding a religion full of stories, family trees, and many gods and their relation to one another, is one of the biggest mysteries Egypt has to offer. While scholars differ on the names and purposes of the gods and their relation to one another, there is an agreement that Egyptians were searching for an…
Every day you hear more and more stories about a couple that is having troubles getting pregnant. Through the advancements in technology over the past decade, reproductive technologies have made it easier for couples struggling to have children to become pregnant. The means of doing this is through In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Surrogate Mothering. Many ethical debates have arisen from these technologies being used and becoming more popular over the years. Many people see different issues…
This essay aims to outline that within a liberal democratic society, in which everyone is free to do whatever they will, as long as it does not impose upon others freedoms, multiculturalists ultimately have to endorse practices they may regard as immoral, although the discussion around the topic is not that simple. For the basis of this argument we are assuming that multiculturalists in this context are living within a liberal democratic society, in which everyone is free to live their life as…
Queer theory has been largely developed by three women: Judith Butler, Gayle Rubin and Eve Sedgwick. Each author argues different viewpoints about a person’s gender, identity and sexuality. Their arguments explore the social and political frameworks through which society interprets sexuality and gender. Since the three arguments regard sexuality in society and politics, could their arguments be compatible with the Althusserian Marxist concepts, especially Marxist definition of ideology? Each of…
During the medieval period, European society lived in the shadow of the Roman Catholic Church until at least the reformation, and so the Catholic Church had a profound effect on the moral landscape of the time, particularly around areas of sexuality and sin. In order to regulate and control sexuality, the church employed various methods, foremost amongst them the encouragement of chastity and it’s aloft alternative celibacy for the clergy, the institution of marriage, as well as establishing…
The world is much different than it was when I was growing up as a child, teenager and young adult. Each year I notice younger and younger children with cell phones and other portable devices that can somehow connect them to the Internet and social media. It seems like in everything we do or sign up for, we need to have some type of profile. Society has made it unacceptable if we do not have a Facebook account and there is this peer pressure from friends and family if we don’t Facebook. We are…
In this essay, I will be exploring the changing presentation of sexuality within classic Victorian literature, exemplified with the use of a case study of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I would argue that perhaps more than in any other literary period, any textual inclination towards sexuality deteriorated as the eighteenth century progressed, ‘desexualising’ it, or, at least confining it to the bedroom doors of married couples. Additionally, whilst essentialist…
This extract opens with an imperative “let the darkness enter”, this immerses the reader into the narrative, without giving a setting or narrative voice. Since the voice of the protagonist is absent from the opening it brings into question who the imperative is addressing, and could suggests a possible disassociation of Berg (the protagonist) from himself, or the narrative. The use of adjectives “embalmed” “mummified” before clarifying what the object of these adjectives is, creates a foreboding…
If no experiments are done, then the lack of information can create a misunderstanding in the community, resulting in a misdiagnosis. This is why it is so important to do more research in the asexual community so that they are not wrongly labeled as having a disorder like the homosexuals in early DSM copies a few decades ago. Similar to a homosexual or bisexual identity, Scherrer explicitly states that asexuality is an identity that somebody is biologically, not a choice. This definition, though…
Maryland, in the year 1984. I was a 15-year-old teenager growing up in Reisterstown, Maryland - a town about an hour away from Baltimore. I was just like any other red-blooded American male teenager growing up in 1980's America. I liked video games and Pac- Man, loved "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark", tried my hand at the Rubik's cube, and was concerned about the USSR and nuclear war. Oh yes, I,like millions of other teenagers loved good rock music and was just beginning to…
