Baseball as we know it has only been around since the mid-1800s, and the fashion that accompanied it was not created until the late 1800s when teams began to develop into semi-pro and then professional teams. It is rumored that the first ball caps in the modern style were worn by the Brooklyn Excelsiors around 1860. These would eventually be transformed into the official hats of major and minor league baseball and the hats worn by football players, hockey players, and basketball players on the sidelines and during press conferences.
The company that first modernized and created the standard baseball cap is the New Era Cap Company. Their product is known as the 59Fifty baseball cap. They first made this style of cap for the Cleveland Indians in 1934, but the public could not even purchase an official 59Fifty cap until 1978. Today, everybody from golfers like Tiger Woods to law enforcement officers and captains of U.S. Navy vessels wear official ball baseball caps.
The trend of wearing ball caps off of the baseball field started as a desire for fans to emulate their sports heroes in the same way as purchasing a jersey might. The benefit of the ball cap is that it can be worn every day. You may be surprised to find out that this tradition only started in the 1950s, and it was not the adults wearing the hats. It was youth baseball players who started to wear their hats off the field and during pickup games that truly started the whole shift in culture.
