What is Social Welfare like in a suburban settlement?

Richmond:


- High housing prices, forces some people to live outside the area and have to commute to work


- The people living outside the area in rural settlements may not be using the shops there and damage business in their home areas.


- They have health problems despite having good general healthcare; 1 in 6 people have major long-term illnesses


- They have many open areas which look relatively clean and well looked after


- Strong sense of community evident by their neighbourhood watch scheme.


- They are situated near heathrow airport so they get a lot of air and noise pollution due to all the flights passing through the airspace above the area.


- High quality high street with many high-end shops.


- Very clean and appealing looking area, again with many open spaces to benefit from and enjoy, as well as scenic views to enjoy.


- Very good employment opportunity with low unemployment (5%) and high employment (65%).


- Low amounts of ethnic minorities with reduce crime rates and tensions in the area - majority white with 85%.


- Education rates are really good, with 45% having degree level qualifications, and 10% without any qualifications at all.

What is social welfare like in a named inner city area?

Canning Town:


- High proportion of ethnic minorities which makes for higher rates of racial tension, segregation, ghetto formation, gangs, and poor communication between those who immigrate and cannot speak english very well - which also hampers employment opportunities.


- The quality of housing in the area is quite poor - with most houses being built in the 19th century they are often very mossy, in need of refurbishment, and most usually cannot afford this because they are in social housing (50%).


- Relatively high unemployment rate (10%), which is set to increase as more immigration occurs and immigrants occupy more jobs, and create more demand for jobs than before.


- Many people in Canning town are affected by long - term illnesses which hamper their economic prospects.


- Most of the workforce is comprised of those doing low-skilled labour-based jobs working in construction and factories. Because of this, the average income for the area is about £25,000 annually.


- Coupled with the fact that the national council has to spend so much money on providing state benefits and social housing for those who cannot afford it, as well as people having a relatively low average salary, it means that they have a very low spending power and cannot afford to improve service provision and so forth.


- Service provision mainly consists of low-key shops such as convenient stores and so forth, high amount of take aways due to the racial diversity of the area. Many gambling firms which reflect on the deprivation in the area which tends to encourage higher rates of gambling.
