Here we see that the development of a city, including the infrastructure, the workplaces and the level of education, is an obstacle to social mobility and it prevents people from changing their social status. According to the video, young people from poor households are 6 times less likely to go to Oxbridge and just 1 in 8 children from low-income backgrounds become high earners. This shows the inequality between those from the capital area and those from the provinces and it explains the reason for the increasing upward mobility in big cities and the almost downward mobility in smaller areas. To confirm this statement, I will use the video ’’ Social Mobility in West Somerset ’’ as a point of departure. It says that the chance of poor kids getting to the top of society depends on where you live. Children in London have the highest chance of improving their lives, while those in Somerset have the lowest.
