What is a nationally recognized method for marking hydrants out of service?

wrap them with a burlap bag. A private owner may use this method. If you see one wrapped. Complete Form 200.51 and Form 300.07 (FMO referral) and email it them to FMO Company Referrals for follow-up.

What should a company officer do when they notice a new fire hydrant.

Fill out Form 200.53 and send it to the Chief Hydrant Officer.

False - you should attach a gate to each port to ensure that the threads are National Standard (NS) and in good condition. Also, you should perform a closed cap test.

How do you perform a closed cap test?

1. tighten all hydrant caps
2. open hydrant fully against closed caps
3.after fully charging hydrant, close it down. Remove one of the 2 1/2" caps, place palm over the port, and feel for suction indicating bleeder valve is working.
4. Some hydrants have small bleeder valves, allow time for proper drainage. Close completely, then open 1/4 turn.

Sometimes the City evaluates static pressure of the water system and will attach a meter to a hydrant. If you come across one of these, is it okay to use?

No - don't use it. Find another source to avoid possible injury. The hydrant is open to apply pressure to testing device.
