Dry Barrel Hydrant Essay

The fire service has many roles in the community and one of those roles is being a fire inspector. In this scenario, one is the fire inspector for a municipal fire department and a newly planned community if being built. It is the fire inspector duties to ensure that the water supply system is being installed correctly. One will discuss the type of hydrants to be installed, explain why one pick that particular hydrant, state how the hydrants will be tested, and provide spacing requirement for the hydrants. This is a planned community consisting of single-family, multi-family dwelling and commercial buildings. The type of hydrants that would be installed in this community would be dry barrel hydrants. The reason the hydrant would be dry barrel is because of the state the community is located which is Alabama. As stated by Sturzenbecker, Adams, and Burnside, (2012), “the dry barrel hydrant is the most common hydrant used in the United States. This type of hydrant is typically used in areas where freezing temperatures are expected” (p.103). It is a known fact that the water from the hydrant is the main source for most cities. In the department that I work for hydrants has to be tested twice a year and on odd years the hydrants are tested and painted. This intel’s using a gauge to test the flow and the static pressure of a hydrant. City water works also test the flow and static pressure of the hydrants. The fire department will keep weeds cut from around the hydrant and report any issues, if any is found the stations inform the water works that a hydrant is out of service. As stated by Stowell and Murnane (2013), In most cities, the repair
